What a wetroom installation involves
A wetroom has no tray or enclosure: the whole floor is waterproofed and formed to fall to a drain, so water runs away rather than pooling. With nothing to contain the water, every part of the tiled area has to be properly tanked and correctly sloped.
The work covers forming the falls, tanking floor and walls, fitting a linear or centre drain, and tiling to a layout that works with the fall. It applies to full conversions, level-access shower rooms and wetroom-style en-suites.
Wetrooms suit step-free access, a cleaner look with no tray edge, and loft conversions or extensions where there is not enough depth for a tray. Because everything depends on the waterproofing and the fall, preparation is not optional: a fall that is slightly out sends water to the wrong low spot.

What happens when a wetroom is not built correctly
The most common failure is standing water: a floor that looks fine dry but puddles after a shower because the fall was never formed accurately. It rarely shows until the room is in daily use, and by then fixing it means lifting the tiling.
The more serious failure is water passing the tanking into the structure below. Any gap at a junction, upstand or drain collar gives water a route into the joists or slab, which on a timber floor can mean a stained ceiling within months and a strip-back to the deck.
Both are avoidable: falls set out and checked before tiling, and tanking installed as a complete system. On a wetroom, the preparation matters more than the tiling above it.

Tiling to the fall
Tiles and grout lines are set out to run with the fall towards the drain, with mitred returns to any niche or bench, and careful cutting around the drain itself.
Step 5
Testing and handover
The finished floor is checked for correct drainage before handover, and the work carries a 1-year workmanship guarantee.

Linear drains suit wetrooms where a single, discreet fall towards one wall is wanted, and they work well with large-format tiles because the floor only needs to fall in one direction. Centre drains suit smaller or squarer rooms and mean the floor falls evenly from all sides towards the middle.
Tile choice affects how forgiving the fall is to lay to: smaller formats and mosaic sit more naturally across a sloped floor with less risk of visible lippage, which is why shower floors within wetrooms are often finished in mosaic even when the rest of the room is large-format porcelain.
