What goes wrong when tiling is rushed or done without a plan
The most common failure is not cracked tiles, it is bad setting out. Start in a corner without planning the room and you get full tiles one side, thin slivers the other, and grout lines that never line up. Once tiles are fixed, that cannot be undone without starting again.
Poor substrate preparation shows up later: hollow spots, cracked grout, tiles lifting underfoot. Over underfloor heating, an untested mat or the wrong adhesive build-up risks damaging the element.
Small faults escalate. A hollow tile by a shower tray lets water into the subfloor, and a poorly grouted junction lets moisture behind a stud wall. By the time it shows, the fix means removing tiles rather than touching them up.

Step 2
Preparation and substrate work
Floors and walls are levelled, primed or boarded as needed. Where underfloor heating, waterproofing or tanking is involved; that is completed and tested before tiling begins.
Step 3
Dry lay and final checks
Tiles are laid out dry wherever pattern, shade or veining matters, so any variation is sorted before fixing rather than discovered halfway through.
Step 4
Fixing
Tiles are fixed with full adhesive coverage, checked for level and lippage as the work progresses, with mitred returns and neat cuts at every junction, socket and fitting.
Step 5
Grouting, sealing and handover
Once adhesive has cured, grouting and silicone are completed to a consistent finish, natural stone is sealed where needed, and the room is handed over with a 1-year workmanship guarantee.

Porcelain is the most common material specified for both walls and floors, because it is dense, low-porosity and available in large formats that suit contemporary kitchens and bathrooms. Ceramic remains a practical, cost-effective choice for walls and lighter-traffic areas. Natural stone, marble and limestone in particular, needs different handling: it must be sorted for shade and veining before fixing, and sealed both before and after grouting to prevent staining.
Mosaic sheets bring their own challenge, since the giveaway of a poor mosaic job is always the sheet joint, a slightly wider gap every 300mm that becomes obvious once you notice it. Large-format tiles, from 600x600mm up to slab sizes, punish an uneven substrate more than any other format, which is why levelling and back-buttering are non-negotiable steps rather than optional extras.
